Basic Tools for Car Repair

There are different a tools for different kinds of repairs, but you don't need every tool under the sun to take care of your car.

You can do 75% of the repairs your car will need with about 10% of the tools out there. Knowing which tool you'll need for a task, what it does, and where to buy it can save you a lot of time and money during maintenance and repairs. Here are the most common and badly needed tools.

car jack
CAR JACK
A car jack, also known as a floor jack or a garage jack, is a device that is used to lift your car up. Most jacks use a lever or a key to lift the car up. A car jack is most commonly used to change a flat tire. The jack pushes the car up and holds it steady while you change the tire. Similarly, car ramps allows you to raise your car up, making tire changes and undercarriage work easier. Nowadays we have different types, hydraulic car jack, electric car jack and exhaust air jack.

tire wrench

Tire Wrench

A tire wrench allows you to remove the nuts that hold the tire to the car. The tire wrench that you use needs to fit the wheel's hexagonal nuts.

With new cars, a jack and wrench that matches your car's needs will be included in the car. If you are buying a tire wrench for a car that lacks one, measure the nut before you purchase. For most newer cars and nearly all imports, the measurement will be in metric units rather than English units.

Ratchet and Socket Set

Ratchet and Socket Set

Choose a basic ratchet set that has both English and metric sizes.

A ratchet is used to quickly turn nuts and bolts without needing to remove the tool from the nut. You can set a ratchet so that it unscrews a bolt or screws one in. Common ratchet sizes include 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch. While standard sockets will work for most repair jobs, use spark plug sockets when working with spark plugs to ensure that the plug will not crack or shatter.

Pliers

-are a hand tool used to hold objects firmly, for cutting, bending, or physical compression.
Pliers can turn, grab, bend or cut, and there are several types that are all suited to their own purposes. Locking pliers can be closed on a bolt or a flat piece of metal and then locked into place; they are handy when a bolt is stripped and cannot be turned by a wrench. Groove joint pliers are widely adjustable, and can be used to hold cylinders, while needle nose pliers have pointed tips that can be used to work in tight areas.

Just a Reminder:

  • If you're not sure how to perform a car repair it is much better to take the car to a mechanic or consult another individual who is comfortable with that particular car repair and the tools that are needed to perform it. Some repairs are much more complex than others; some car repair tools should only be used for certain things, and there are many ways to cause damage to a car if a person is not clear on what he or she is doing. Having car repair tools can be very helpful, but without the knowledge of how to use them correctly and safely, the car should be taken to a qualified mechanic, as this could potentially save a lot of time and money in the end.
